About

Sound system culture is a term we use to describe the historical and contemporary cultural currents that give shape to the grass-roots dance music scenes that also function as social movements. These socially engaged movements are important because they are very often the motors of information exchange, skill sharing, community building, democratic reform, innovation, and creativity.

Our aim is to connect grass-roots communities, independent artists and break the silence. Sound System Culture is a physical and collective experience which we should share together.

Digital broadcasting opportunities and social media are inevitably important, but they also have only limited capacities as they’ve been also abused by capitalist structures. The commercial entertainment industry tends to treats us as remote passive spectators, our social movements include people as participating community members.

For that reason we aim to host events to exchange, debate and dance together in an inclusive and diverse environment.

Inspired by our shared love of bass-heavy music (from Reggae, Dub, Hip Hop and Drum n Bass to Techno and other forms of experimental sound system music) we are looking for other like-minded allies to contribute to our days of sound system culture. We welcome contributions such as exhibitions, workshops, live performances, skill-shares and open talks on subjects that relate to some of the key creative elements that give life to the culture.

For example: organizational structure, social justice, creative technology, music production, the visual and performing arts, screen printing, exhibitions, mapping, dance, theatre, carnival costume, etc.
